CHOI Ji-woong and SEONG Min-gyu, classmates of the department, acceptance of the potential of scientists Development of a startup item with unique ideas, preparation of about KRW 270 million of business fund including government subsidy Robot scientists concentrated in development of “smart crutches” … “We will conduct researches to help society and to be shared.” [January 17, 2023] <CHOI Ji-woong (left) and SEONG Min-gyu (right) from YU Department of Robotics Engineering selected as Presidential Science Scholarship Students> YU Department of Robotics Engineering produced two Presidential Science Scholarship Students. Presidential Science Scholarship Students is a system to excavate excellent students in science and technology area and to support them with scholarship so that they grow to be future scientists. Since 2003, about 150 domestic and foreign science and engineering university students have been selected every year in the first and third grades of undergraduate studies. Up to now, more than 2,800 scholarship students were produced. Scholarship students are selected based on their academic performances, personality/aptitude, social responsibility, and scientific debating ability, etc. and the selected scholarship students receive full tuition and KRW 2.5 million of learning support money every semester until graduation. Considering that scholarship students are selected from all students at domestic and foreign universities, it is unusual that a department of a university produced two students. It means that their potential was recognized as scientists to lead Korea to that extent. The heroes of the honor are CHOI Ji-woong and SEONG Min-gyu from YU Department of Robotics Engineering. They are the classmates of a same department and entered in YU Department of Robotics Engineering in 2018. CHOI Ji-woong is an engineering talent who has entrepreneurship for R&D of startup items with a unique ideas. He has been working for Entrepreneurship Project Team (startup group) of YU LINC3.0 Project Team Startup Education Center and served as the 10th representative. The representative item is “Pooping Hero” which is a pet bowel pad made of scraps of masks. With the item, he won 15 support projects and contents including pre-startup package of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and prepared KRW 269 million of business fund last year. With this system, he received Grand Prize in “2021 SW OPENBANK Project.” Many graduate students participated in the contest at that time but he won the first place with recognition of excellence of his idea and his research power. CHOI Ji-woong said, “I will develop AI behavior analysis solutions to be used in various areas including national defense, security, leisure, and medicine, etc. by analyzing human behaviors. I am accumulating research performances and know-how on sleepiness. I’d like to conduct in-depth researches on related academic areas including computer vision, video processing, and control after entering into the graduate school.” SEONG Min-gyu is a robotic engineer to dream wearable robots for the disabled. He is an undergraduate research student of Human Robot Convergence Lab (HRC Lab, Tutor CHOI Jeong-soo) of YU. He is developing “Smart crutches” to help the disabled for walking with free hands by guaranteeing users’ convenience and safety, in order to manufacture wearable robots for the disabled. SEONG Min-gyu said, “I am concentrating on R&D of 'dynamic force measuring device' in order to know the force by wearing the information on current physical movement only. As the information on various motions which could not be measured in past may be measured, there is the advantage that users’ intentions may be identified and information may be analyzed in order to be used for diverse purposes. I am pleased to be recognized of the potential of my research with selection for Presidential Science Scholarship Students. I’d like to make R&D activities to help our society and to be shared by us through in-depth researches after entering into the university.” Meanwhile, the students selected for Presidential Science Scholarship Students participated in “Talk with future scientists” held in Blue House Guesthouse on the 22nd December and received scholarship certificates and medals.
