Top award at the 'Global Innovation Management' hosted by the Journalists Federation of Korea. It recognizes YU as leading university in international development cooperation and global social responsibility projects [April 11, 2014] YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) received the '2014 True Education Award of Korea' selected by the Journalists Federation of Korea (Chairman Lee Sang-yeol). YU received the top award in the 'global innovation management sector' at the '2014 True Education Award of Korea' held at the International Conference Room on the 20th floor of the Korea Press Center at 3 p.m. on the 10th. The annual 'True Education Award of Korea' is hosted by the Journalist Federation of Korea (Chairman Lee Sang-yeol) and sponsored by the Ministry of Education for all universities in the nation. It selects winning universities by evaluating areas such as creation of academic value, creativity and reform of educational policies, global competitiveness, and employment and venture performance. YU was evaluated highly for leading intellectual Hallyu (Korean cultural wave) through the scientification and globalization of the Saemaul Undong and Saemaul spirit. In September 2011, YU established the 'Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (Dean Park Seung-woo)' and graduate the first 'Saemaul studies master' in the world in August. It has been playing a leading role to fulfill the university's global social responsibilities. Furthermore, it signed MOUs with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea Forest Service, Rural Development Administration, Korea Rural Economic Institute, and the Korea Rural Community Corporation to jointly pursue international development cooperation projects and global social responsibility projects using the Saemaul Undong as its business contents. In June of last year, YU also signed exchange and cooperation MOUs with nine national universities in seven Southeast Asian countries to play a leading role in spreading 'Intellectual Hallyu' focusing on Saemaul Undong, Korean language, and engineering technologies. It is further enhancing its international status through various international exchange activities such as professor and student exchange and overseas internship programs with prestigious schools around the world including Michigan Tech and UC Davis of the United States, Tsinghua University of China, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Technology, and Adelade University of Australia. Thanks to such achievements, YU was selected as an 'international cooperation leading university' from the Ministry of Education in 2013. In March, the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul took first place in the evaluation of 'leader and professor fostering projects for regional development of emerging countries' master's degree program by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), thus receiving 1.2 billion won every year for three years, for a total of 3.6 billion won. Meanwhile, a total of 12 universities were awarded at the '2014 True Education Award of Korea' including YU, Sogang University (creative convergence education center) and Dongguk University (creative education).

Recognized for Contributions to Korea-Myanmar Forest Cooperation Project Development and Saemaul Undong-based International Development Cooperation, Minister Win Tun said, "Values of the Saemaul Undong and its spirit are the keys to the sustainable development of Myanmar". [Apr 9, 2014] YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) bestowed an honorary PhD to Myanmar Minister of Environment Conservation and Forestry Win Tun (62) YU President Noh Seok-kyun met with Minister Win Tun at the university president office at 10:30 a.m. on the 9th to give an honorary PhD in public administration for his contributions to the development of cooperation projects in forestry between Korea and Myanmar, Saemaul Undong-based international development, and academic development in the public administration sector. Minister Win Tun has worked on practicing forest administration for the sustainable development and forest preservation of Myanmar by pursuing economic development in Myanmar via regional development and afforestation that integrates the Saemaul Undong spirit and by strengthening investment cooperation in afforestation with Korea. Moreover, he took the initiative in the founding of the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) to play a leading role for joint international response to forestry issues that face Asia such as response to climate change, prevention of desolation of forests, and preservation of bio-diversity. Former Minister of the Korea Forest Service Lee Don-gu, Vice-minister Kim Yong-ha and international students from Myanmar attended the presentation ceremony to congratulate Minister Win Tun's acceptance of the honorary PhD. YU President Noh Seok-kyun gave a congratulatory address saying, "I hope that Minister Win Tun, who has displayed excellent administrative capacities based on vast experience in international cooperation in the forest sector, will be a bridge for cooperation between Korea and Myanmar." Minister Win Tun replied, "I do not think that receiving this honorary PhD from YU is simply from personal achievements. I feel a grave sense of responsibility as an urge to contribute to humanity and the environment." He also added, "The international community must cooperate for the sustainable development of humanity. Korea's experience is helping a lot in the democratization and economic development of Myanmar. The values pursued by Korea's Saemaul Undong and spirit are the key to the sustainable development strategy pursued by Myanmar." As the director of the Myanmar Timber Enterprise (MTE), which is a state-run company, since 1999, Minister Win Tun commands major national forest policies, while also pursuing various international cooperation projects such as constructing cooperation systems with international organizations such as FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization), and ITTO (International Tropical Timber Organization). He also served as the chairperson of the Myanmar Environmental Preservation Committee and the National Land Survey Committee. He was appointed as the Myanmar Minister of Environment Preservation and Forestry. Meanwhile, YU will grant former National Assemblyman Kim Su-han (85) an honorary PhD in law on the 15th. Former National Assemblyman Kim graduated from the YU Department of Law in 1953 and served as a National Assemblyman in the 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15 Assembly, being a six-term National Assemblyman and the chair of the 15th National Assembly.

100 plus power YU alumni spent 2 days at YU. Power leaders in various sectors such as former Minister Jeon Jae-hee, National Assemblyman Kim Gwang-rim, Woori Bank Senior Vice-president Lee Dong-geon, Samil Price Waterhouse Coopers CEO Park Soo-hwan, Movie Director Cho Jin-gyu, etc. had pleasant times with their college Juniors and encouraged them. [Apr 7, 2014] 'Power leaders' who are leading Korea gathered at YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) At 12:30 p.m. on the 4th, over 100 alumni currently in the finance and economic sectors including Ilshin Electronics CEO Yoon Sang-hyeon (64, Commerce '69) who is the chairperson of the Finance Alumni Association, visited YU for two days. This is the fourth year that YU alumni in the finance sector are visiting since 2011. Former Minister of Health and Welfare Jeon Jae-hee (64, Public Administration '68), National Assemblyman Kim Sang-hoon (51, Law '82), CEO of Samil Price Waterhouse Coopers CEO Park Soo-hwan (58, Economics '75), Woori Bank Senior Vice-president Lee Dong-geon (56, Business Administration '76), Movie Director Cho Jin-gyu (53, Painting, '80) and other key figures in government, finance, arts and other sectors took the time from their busy schedules to gather at their old school. Finance Alumni Association Chairman Yoon Sang-hyeon, who visited YU every year since 2011 said, "I wasn't able to sleep because of the excitement of being able to visit my school and meeting my juniors," and added, "Though we have left the school, our hearts still hope for the best for our mother school and juniors." YU held a welcoming event and luncheon for the alumni who spared their time for junior students, and YU President Noh Seok-kyun, professors, and the student government president visited the event to express their gratitude. In his welcoming address, YU President Noh Seok-kyun said, "Students are proud of their senior alumni serving as leaders in different parts of our society," and added, "I trust the students will follow suit of their seniors and become leaders of Korea." Meetings with juniors in different departments were held following the welcoming luncheon. The alumni in the finance sector visited their school for the first time in a long time to talk with their students at their old campus and to give their advice and encouragement to juniors as senior alumni and social leaders. On the second day, a free dialogue-type exchange event and a Q&A session between the alumni and current students were held at the YU Law School Room 206 under the title, "Talking with heroes. Passionate talk! One question to change the future." Meanwhile, since its inauguration in March 1971, the YU Finance Alumni Association has been very active with over 40,000 members.

‘Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul’ can receive a total of 3.6 billion won in three years from KOICA. [Apr 4, 2014] <Students and faculty of the YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul pose for a photo after morning cleaning on April 1. On the 1st of every month, they clean the school as the 'Saemaul Spirit Practice and Volunteer Day'.> YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) made another great achievement in international development cooperation and global Saemaul Undong. On the 21st, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) announced that they selected the YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (dean Park Seung-woo) (hereinafter called 'Saemaul School' as the master's degree program institute for the 'leader and professor fostering project for regional development of emerging countries'. This selection was made through open competition and after cutting down to the final three graduate schools, the YU Saemaul School was assessed as first place. Accordingly, the YU Saemaul School will receive 1.2 billion won every year for three years for a total of 3.6 billion won (3 years 108 people) to education public officials, employees and faculty of emerging nations. The YU Saemaul School that received its first students in March 2012 provided full scholarships and a monthly allowance of 1 million won to students from emerging nations from Gyeongsangbuk-do, Saegu, and the National Forest Service Green Project Team. Scholarships increased from various institutional organizations to educate close to 100 international students from emerging nations. With this new scholarship from KOICA, the YU Saemaul School will be able to provide the opportunity to learn and share the development experience of Korea without worrying about tuition to about 130 students from emerging countries every year. Director of the International Development Cooperation Center Choi Oe Chool, who is in charge of YU's international development projects, said, "By receiving a considerable scholarship by being assessed for our educational capacities by KOICA, the YU Saemaul School has now become a central education institute for fostering human resources of emerging nations for the purpose of eradicating poverty in emerging nations and for development cooperation." YU Saemaul School Dean Park Seung-woo, who is the supervisor of this project, stated, "This is an exciting achievement in which the accomplishments of our graduate school for the past two years have been officially recognized nationwide." He also added, "We will do our best to properly teach the Saemaul Undong and spirit to the excellent human resources from emerging countries though KOICA's consigned education program. Furthermore, we will strive to become Korea's top educational institute for contributing to the eradication of absolute poverty in the world." Meanwhile, YU was selected as an 'international cooperation leading university' from the Ministry of Education in June 2013. Accordingly, it received 1.6 billion won in national funding and is pursuing the establishment of the 'Saemaul Department' in local universities in the Philippines. YU is also actively pursuing Saemaul Undong localization projects and expert fostering projects in emerging countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam.

'Foreign Investment Company Employment Fair' was held at YU for the first time in the region. 6 foreign companies such as Taegutec, Korea Delphi, Novelis Korea, etc. gave public presentations on their employment plans and HR personnel consultings. [Apr 3, 2014] Foreign companies visited YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) en masse to search for talents. The 'foreign investment company employment seminar' was held at YU for the first time in the nation. With the attendance of foreign company HR personnel from 2 to 4 p.m. on the 3rd at the YU Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall, the '2013 Gyeongbuk region college foreign investment company employment seminar' was held. Over 500 students packed the seminar showing their high interest to find employment in foreign companies. Cho Shil-yeob (24, senior in the YU School of Mechanical Engineering) who attended the employment seminar said, "I have been interested in getting a job at a foreign company," while adding, "It is harder to gain information on foreign companies compared to Korea companies, but I was able to get a lot of answers through this." This employment seminar, which was supervised by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do and KOTRA (Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency) and sponsored by YU, Gyeongsan City, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional College Employment Association, was joined by a total of six foreign companies including the world's largest aluminum rolling company, Novelis Korea, Korea Delphi, ADT Caps and Taegutec from America, as well as ABB Korea and FRL Korea from Japan. Taegutek is a subsidiary of the US IMC (International Metalworking Companies), which is one of the top 3 groups in the world for wire rope processing, is famous as a company invested by the world famous investor, Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Choi Jae-baek (36), assistant manager at the Taegutec HR Team who visited YU for this employment seminar, said, "As a foreign company in this region, we are highly interested in hiring local human resources," while adding, "I hope that many students will become interested in and apply for foreign companies through this employment seminar and consulting." Following the employment seminar was individual employment consulting by participating companies. 1:1 consulting by HR representatives from each company was also offered to students interested in finding employment at foreign companies at the Cheonma Art Center Convention Hall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Various information needed for landing jobs were provided to students through individual meetings with HR personnel in the foreign companies. YU Student Capacity Development Office Director Kim Young-tak, who prepared for this event, said, "Due to the characteristics of foreign companies that select human resources normally upon need, the region's first employment seminar of foreign invested companies was a great opportunity for students to gain various employment information of foreign companies."

3-way MOU among 'YU-Gyeongsangbuk do-LG Display' is expected to foster creative and convergent human resources, to create jobs, and to develop local industry. [Mar 27, 2014] YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) constructed an industry-academic-government cooperation system to foster creative convergent human resources who can quickly adapt to the workplace needed by companies, and to enhance student employment rates. At 1:30 p.m. on the 26th, YU signed a work MOU for the development of the local display industry and to enhance student employment rates by fostering talented human resources and creating jobs together with Gyeongsangbuk-do (Governor Kim Kwan-yong) and LG Display (CEO Han Sang-beom) at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office conference room1. The purpose of this MOU is to provide the opportunity for mutual cooperation and sharing roles to foster talented human resources, create jobs and develop local industries by using the strengths of colleges, companies and local governments and through their cooperation. Through this MOU, YU agreed to foster highly qualified human resources in demand by companies by constructing an outstanding education system and development of student employment capacity strengthening programs, while also using the university's research capacities to provide customized technological/development education for employees at LG Display and by joint utilization of the research equipment possessed by YU. Also, LG Display agreed to actively hire human resources from YU and Gyeongbuk promised to provide full administrative and financial support to enhance the competitiveness of the regional display industry and to create jobs. At the signing ceremony, YU President Noh Seok-kyun said, "Through this industry-academy-government MOU, we hope to bring about development of the regional industry and to create jobs," and added, "YU will also contribute in promoting the regional economy by not only fostering human resources needed by companies, but by sharing the research and technological capacities of our university."

AFoCO is the first international forestry organization established under the leadership of Korea in August 2012. It was founded with the goal to solve the deforestation issue resulting from various environmental factors such as climate change and forest disasters, as well as socio-economic factors such as development pressure resulting from the economical development of Asia. There are a total of 11 member countries including Korea and the ten countries of the Association of South-East Asian Nations such as Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam and the Philippines. The two institutes met at the YU president's reception room at 11 a.m. on the 26th and agreed to utilize the capacities of each other's institutes to foster experts and pursue projects in relevant fields such as for the planning and operation of degree programs and short-term training courses, as well as exchange of knowledge to develop and improve capacity strengthening programs in the forestry and Saemaul Undong fields. YU President Noh Seok-kyun, College of Education Dean Kim Jin-sam, Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul Dean Park Seung-woo, Vice-dean Han Dong-geun, Vice-dean Kim Gi-soo, and AFoCO Secretary-general Hadisusanto Pasaribu, Vice secretary-general Park Jong-ho, Planning and HR Team Director Kim Gyeong-soo, Overseas Cooperation Team Director Lee Young-joo, Senior PR Cooperation Officer Htain Lin, and Project Manager Choi Sung-ho attended this event. At this ceremony, YU President Noh Seok-kyun stated, "By combining the academic knowledge of the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul and the work capacities of ASEAN, it will create various synergy effects for the project including the fostering of experts in Saemaul Undong, forestry and international development cooperation." It is expected that this MOU will contribute in the efficient pursuance of various projects of AFoCO such as restoring the forest ecology, increasing the income and improving the capacities of residents of forest areas in emerging countries, prevention of deforestation and response to climate change, and preservation of forest bio-diversity.

Park In-gyu (Trade ’73) appointed as chairperson of DGB Financial Holdings and president of Bank of Daegu Lee Dong-geon (Business Administration ’76) appointed as senior vice-president of Woori Bank Senior officials in 4 major financial holdings groups, top 3 in the nation, top outside of the Seoul area [Mar 24, 2014] <Alumni in the finance sector> (from left to right - Ha Chun-soo, former chairman of DGB Financial Holdings, Park In-gyu, chairperson of DGB Financial Holdings, Lee Dong-geon, senior vice=president of Woori Bank) YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) has once again shown its alumni power with senior executives in the finance sector. First, the most celebrated case is Park In-gyu (60) who was appointed as the new and 11th president and chairman of Daegu Bank on the 21st, and the 2nd chairman of DGB Financial Holdings. Mr. Park, who is an alumnus of the YU Department of Trade class of '73, began working for Daegu Bank in 1979. He rose through the ranks becoming the director of the Seoul branch, vice-president of the strategic financial department, director (vice-president) of the marketing group, and the director (vice-president) of the support group. He is assesses to have excellent leadership and a vast human network. The first chairperson who founded DGB Financial Holdings and the 10th president of Daegu Bank was Ha Chun-soo (60), who also graduated from the YU Department of Business Administration as the class of '72. Thus, YU alumni have been commanding DGB Financial Holdings and Daegu Bank. Former Chairman Ha stepped down gracefully by announcing that he would resign as the chairman of DGB Financial Holdings with a month left of his tenure as well as from Daegu Bank with a year left on the 17th of last month to help foster the younger generation. Also, on the 20th, Lee Dong-geon (56) who graduated from the YU Department of Business Administration as the class of '76 was appointed as the senior vice president of Woori Bank. The senior vice president is the 'no. 2' person who is briefed on all pending issues of the bank and the top candidate for the next president of the bank. Mr. Lee graduated from the YU Department of Business Administration and started working with Woori Bank, which was at the time called Hanil Bank, and served as the sales director and vice president of loan support department. The alumni power of YU is already prevalent in the financial sector. According to CEO Score, an assessment company for corporate management performance, studied 44 financial companies under the four major financial holdings companies in September of last year, and revealed that YU graduated the third most senior officials following Seoul National University and Korea University. There were nine YU alumni who accounted for a third of the senior officials of universities outside from the Seoul area. Six of them were in the Shinhan Financial group, two in Hana Financial, and one in Woori Financial.

Kang Han-moe of College of Music (Major of Composition), wins 1st place for composition at the 40th concours Expressed the folk ritual 'salpuri' using western instruments such as flute, oboe, viola and double bass [Mar 18, 2014] A student at the YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) College of Music took first place in Korea's top music concours. The winner was Kang Han-moe (22) who majors in composition. Mr. Kang took the highest honors in the composition sector at the 40th Joongang Music Concours that closed its curtains on the 12th. The Joongang Concours was first held in 1975 and this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It is undisputedly Korea's top music concours in terms of both number of participants and talents of winners. Past winners include singers Jo Sumi, Kim Dong-gyu, pianist Kim Dae-jin and musical actress Kim So-hyeon. This concours was sponsored by KT&G and hosted by Joongang Ilbo and JTBC from January 3. A total of 443 contestants participated in six sectors such as piano, violin, cello, clarinet, vocal (men, women) and song composition. After two preliminaries and one main judging held in February and March, Kang took first place in song composition. There were a total of 18 winners in six sectors this year with six being from Seoul National University, five from the Korea National University of Arts, and one each from Yonsei University, Ewha Womens University, Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, Gachon University, Gyeongsang National University, and Seoul Arts High School. The assignment of composing was 'instrumental quartet including double bass'. Kang's work was an 11 minute chamber music titled 'Salpuri for flute, oboe, viola and double bass'. Kang's work was focused on the 'integration of traditional culture and music', and it received good reviews by expressing the folk ritual called 'salpuri' with the western instruments of flute, oboe, viola and double bass. Kang said that he did not even dream about winning first place during the first judging on the score and second judging on description of the work, and said, "I was able to win first place thanks to the performers who expressed my song well during the final judging on the performance." Kang, who says that preparing for various concours is a new challenge and fun, said, "I think that music is necessary wherever there are people," while adding, "I want to become a composer who makes music that can communicate with people, regardless of the musical genre."
